"I was aged 8 when the War broke out and lived in the main street at a newsagents throughout that. I recall clearly seeing the first vehicles of the Dutch soldiers entering the town, many came into our shop, and I have numerous other memories of them and their splendid band.
Bill Kortelings family, Wife Trudy, Children Betty and Hans stayed with my Aunt, Mrs Gwen Brown, for a considerable time.
I knew Bill and was aware of his death. I remember hearing at the time from Gwen or Randle Brown (my Aunt and Uncle, who hosted Trudy and the children) that Bill had caught pneumonia but was ordered out on local manoeuvres when the weather was very cold, probably with snow on the ground, on which he had to lie for some time. His health deteriorated quickly and he died very soon afterwards. My family was disgusted at this treatment.
After Trudy, Betty and Hans moved to Letchworth, I saw them occasionally again as they were invited to weddings in Gwen's family shortly after the War.
In fact, I drove to Letchworth to bring them to Congleton on one such occasion certainly."
